Amazon can charge sellers a monthly account fee, a percentage of every sale, fulfillment and storage costs, and advertising fees for visibility. Sponsored Products use a pay-per-click system, so sellers may pay each time a shopper clicks—even when no purchase is made. Depending on the category, fulfillment method, storage needs, and advertising spend, the total cost of selling can take a large share of the sale.

Amazon controls the marketplace while also competing inside it. Original creators can face cheaper copies, private-label competition, and sellers who undercut work they did not create.

Amazon controls the customer relationship. Vendors may make the product and earn the sale, but they do not control the full connection they helped create.
