A government that operates in service of a political movement rather than the people it governs crosses a fundamental line. The six conservative justices who granted broad presidential immunity, dismantled affirmative action, and rolled back voting protections did not interpret the Constitution – they rewrote its reach in favor of concentrated power. Black Americans recognize this pattern with historical clarity. Every era of regression in this country arrived dressed in legal language. Reconstruction ended through legislation and court decisions. Jim Crow carried the force of law. Today’s Supreme Court majority uses the same machinery to shield corruption, gut accountability, and protect the powerful from the consequences that ordinary citizens face every single day.

The most dangerous form of criminal enterprise wears a suit and carries a gavel. When the highest court in the land hands a president immunity for official acts, strips agencies of regulatory power, and dismantles the legal tools communities use to fight discrimination, it does not deliver justice – it manufactures protection for those who already hold the most power. For Black communities, the consequences arrive immediately – in voting districts redrawn to dilute Black political strength, in environmental regulations gutted in neighborhoods already carrying the heaviest pollution burden, in civil rights protections narrowed to the point of disappearance.
